This course gives a detailed description of the electrical system blackout of August 14th, 2003. Being one of the largest blackouts in US history, it affected more than 50 million people in the eastern United States territory. This is the first part of a two part series and covers conditions prior to the start of the blackout sequence and casual events leading to the power system cascade.
After taking this course, one will be able to explain and understand the conditions leading up to the start of the blackout sequence, the key entities affected by the blackout, the system failures of FE, the ineffectiveness of MISO, the issues related to nature and vegetation, the impact of a lack of situational awareness, etc.
At the end of this course, there is a multiple-choice quiz consisting of twenty (20) questions from Chapters 1-3 of the NAERC Technical Analysis of the August 14, 2003, Blackout, to earn 4-PDH for accreditation.
