VIRTUAL EVENT: Inherited Gastrointestinal Cancers and Genetic Testing |
Brochure: | Download Conference Brochure (PDF) |
Course Director(s): |
Fay Kastrinos, MD, MPH; Wendy Chung, MD, PhD & Amanda Bergner, MS, CGC |
Dates: |
10/05/2020 - 10/05/2020 |
Course Number: |
Genetics PM 1 |
Description & Objectives: |
This course is designed for gastroenterologists, GI surgeons, medical and surgical oncologists, genetic counselors, geneticists, gynecologists, pathologists, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, cancer registry coordinators, and any other professionals involved in the care of individuals with hereditary cancer syndromes.
This conference will provide an interdisciplinary educational forum to disseminate new knowledge on the identification and management of individuals and families with a genetic susceptibility to the development of gastrointestinal cancers. This conference will describe the clinical presentation, genetic basis, and cancer risks associated with inherited cancer syndromes and integrate familial cancer risk assessment, genetic testing approaches, assessment of actionable of test results, and genetic risk counseling. Didactic and case-based presentations from Columbia University and other experts in the evaluation and management of inherited gastrointestinal cancers syndromes will be featured. The goal is to improve detection of GI cancer syndromes, understand related cancer risks, and optimize strategies for the prevention and early detection of cancers to minimize morbidity and mortality. This course will aid healthcare providers with implementing the best and most current evidence into their routine care for patients and families with inherited GI cancer syndromes.
At the conclusion of this activity, participants will be better able to:
•Identify and diagnose hereditary gastrointestinal syndromes •Describe the associated cancer risks and surveillance strategies for inheritedgastrointestinal cancer syndromes, including Lynch, polyposis, gastric cancer andfamilial pancreatic adenocarcinoma •Describe the surgical approaches for the management of inherited gastrointestinalcancer syndromes for treatment and risk reduction •Present novel approaches to screening and outcomes of cancer surveillance programsin high risk individuals •Discuss the integration of genetic screening and testing results into clinical care •Discuss the utility of next generation sequencing technologies through multigenepanel testing and tumor testing •Describe the impact of multigene panel testing to diagnose and manage inherited GIcancer syndromes •Recognize the impact of germline genomics on therapeutic options in oncologypractice |
Accreditation: |
The Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide continuing medical education for physicians.
AMA CREDIT DESIGNATION STATEMENT The Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons designates this live activity for a maximum of 6.25 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity. The National Society of Genetic Counselors (NSGC) has authorized The Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons to offer up to 0.6 CEUs or 6 Category 1 contact hours for the activity Inherited Gastrointestinal Cancers and Genetic Testing.
