HIV/AIDS 4 Hours Update

Overview / Abstract:

Needs statement
This 4 hour course meets the HIV/AIDS continuing education requirement for radiology technology licensure and other healthcare professionals in the State of Florida. No CE is awarded for radiology technology professionals.

Course goals
Information regarding the prevention, transmission, control, diagnosis and treatment of Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) infection and Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS) is provided. Standard precautions, care of persons living with AIDS, workplace issues and legal aspects for health care professionals are also discussed.

Target audience
This course is designed for Florida Radiology Technology professionals, Clinical Laboratory Personnel, and Nurses.

Learning objectives
After the completion of this course, the learner should be able to:
-Describe the epidemiology and immunopathogenesis of AIDS;
-Identify methods of HIV transmission and reduction/prevention techniques;
-Describe the clinical management of HIV/AIDS;
-Discuss medications and therapeutic strategies used to treat HIV/AIDS;
-List laboratory tests utilized in the diagnosis and management of HIV/AIDS;
-Identify typical psychosocial consequences experienced by many persons living with HIV/AIDS;
-Outline legal considerations for health professionals regarding HIV/AIDS.

Method of Participation
In order to receive credit, participants should read the entire monograph, complete and submit an evaluation and score at least 70% (75% for radiology technologists) on the self-assessment test. AKH Inc. allows for one (1) re-test at no additional charge; additional re-tests must be purchased again at the full cost. Jonathan S. Holman, B.S., Pharm. D.

Dr. Holman has extensive experience as a clinical pharmacist in adult intensive care. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Colorado and a Doctor of Pharmacy degree from the Medical University of South Carolina. Virginia McCarty, RN, CIC, LHRM

Ms. McCarty is a diploma graduate nurse with certification in infection control and healthcare risk management. She is a member of the Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology (APIC) and Florida Risk Managers Association. Ms. McCarty has extensive background in teaching healthcare professionals the principles of infection control, OSHA bloodborne pathogens, hazardous waste management, risk management and documentation. She is currently employed by AKH Inc. as an Educational Consultant. Ms. McCarty discloses no significant financial relationships with pharmaceutical or medical product manufacturers.

AKH REVIEWER

Christine Redfield, B.S, Pharm. D.

Dr. Christine Redfield currently holds her pharmacist licensure in the State of Florida, Oregon and Washington and is a registered Pharmacy Consultant. After completing her pharmacy residency in the State of Wyoming, her focus became strong in emergency medicine, mental health and education. She is currently working as a Specialty Clinical Pharmacist in the Emergency Department within the Providence Health Ministry as well as participating as an independent consultant.

Dr. Redfield holds a Bachelor of Science degree in both Chemistry and Biology from the University of North Florida and a Doctorate of Pharmacy degree from the University of Florida. She has extensive experience in the research field, having worked with The Mayo Clinic Research Team. She was the 2009 recipient of the Judith Reyes Award, has given numerous presentations covering various medical topics and is a volunteer for the Medical Reserve Corps. Dr. Redfield discloses no significant financial relationships with pharmaceutical or medical product manufacturers.
