HIV/AIDS 1 Hour Update for Florida Radiology Technologists

Overview / Abstract:

Target Audience: This course is designed to provide HIV/AIDS continuing education for physicians, physician assistants, pharmacists, nurses, and other health professionals. This course is designed to meet the 1 hour HIV/AIDS continuing education requirement for health professionals licensed in the state of Florida.

Activity Description
This is a 1 hour activity designed for home study by healthcare clinicians. Specifically, it meets the 1 hour HIV/AIDS continuing education for Florida health professionals that is required prior to their initial re-licensure. Information regarding the prevention, transmission, control, diagnosis and treatment of Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) infection and Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS) is provided. The legal aspects for Florida health care professionals are also discussed. Licensure requirement for Florida health professionals. New antiviral agents and use and clinical trial data are continually reshaping the therapeutic management of this infection.

Objectives
Upon completion of this activity, the participant will be able to:

Describe the epidemiology, immunopathogenesis, and diagnosis of AIDS;
Identify methods of HIV transmission and reduction/prevention techniques;
Explain the current clinical management of HIV/AIDS;
Discuss current medications and therapeutic strategies used to treat HIV/AIDS;
Describe laboratory tests utilized in the diagnosis and management of HIV/AIDS;
Outline Florida Law as it relates to HIV testing.

Jonathan S. Holman, B.S., Pharm. D.
Dr. Holman has extensive experience as a clinical pharmacist in adult intensive are and has held clinical management roles in medical centers. He currently serves as adjunct faculty for the University of Florida and supervises a clinical rotation in Drug Information. In addition to his role at AKH Inc., Dr. Holman works as a clinical pharmacist at Orange Park Medical Center.
Dr. Holman holds a Bachelor of Science degree in pharmacy from the University of Colorado and a Doctor of Pharmacy degree from the Medical university of South Carolina. He is a certified CME Professional from the National Commission for Certification of CME Professionals, Inc. Dr. Holman discloses no significant financial relationships with pharmaceutical or medical product manufacturers.

Virginia McCarty, RN, CIC, LHRM
Ms. McCarty is a diploma graduate nurse with certification in infection control and healthcare risk management. She is a member of the Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology (APIC) and Florida Risk Managers Association. Ms. McCarty has extensive background in teaching healthcare professionals the principles of infection control, OSHA bloodborne pathogens, hazardous waste management, risk management and documentation. She is currently employed by AKH Inc. as an Educational Consultant. Ms. McCarty discloses no significant financial relationships with pharmaceutical or medical product manufacturers.

Christine Redfield, B.S, Pharm. D.
Dr. Redfield has experience in clinical, consulting and pharmacy education. She currently holds her pharmacist licensure in the State of Florida and Oregon and is a registered Pharmacy Consultant in Florida. After completing her pharmacy residency in the State of Wyoming, her focus became strong in geriatrics, behavioral health and education. She is currently working as a Clinical Pharmacist in a hospital in Southern Oregon as well as participating as an independent consultant.
Dr. Redfield holds a Bachelor of Science degree in both Chemistry and Biology from the University of North Florida. She also holds a Doctorate of Pharmacy degree from the University of Florida. She has extensive experience in the research field, having held a position with The Mayo Clinic, Jacksonville. She was the 2009 recipient of the Judith Reyes Award, has given numerous presentations covering various pharmacy topics and is a volunteer for the Medical Reserve Corps. Dr. Redfield discloses no significant financial relationships with pharmaceutical or medical product manufacturers.
