The Big Data IP Problem: Big Issues for Big Data

Access Activity

Overview / Abstract:

Rapid advancements in technology have allowed for extensive quantities of information to be stored electronically. These mega-databases have made it possible to make increasingly accurate predictions based on analytic observations. The emergence of "big data" has both served the public interest and created new legal concerns regarding personal autonomy and privacy protection. Where all of an entity's information is compiled into one "electronic book", which is connected to various ancillary databases, how does that entity protect its identity, brand, and intellectual property rights? The program explores the ways that "big data" enhances and impedes innovation, the privacy issues it creates, and the viable solutions to creating a more secure system of compiling data.
