Introduction to Chinese Language and Culture

Overview / Abstract:

The goal of the course is to establish a solid foundation in modern standard Chinese language through the integration of all 5 skills: listening, speaking, reading, writing, and cultural skills. Characters, vocabulary and grammatical patterns are learned through communicative contexts. Through the course, students will be able to carry out conversations in Chinese on a range of topics, such as introducing oneself, discussing daily routines, cooking, shopping, talking on the phone, reading and writing notes, letters, etc. Approximately 300 frequently used Chinese characters and 450 lexical items or expressions will be learned.

Tuesday 6-8 PM & Wednesday 6-8 PM or Thursday 6-8 PM. Whole class meets Tuesdays; HRM students have second session on Wednesday, BA Culinary have second session on Thursday PM. Course registration may have an impact on the schedule. Program students will be provided first registration opportunities.
