Asthma Clinical Pharmacy Certificate Program

Access Activity

Overview / Abstract:

This certificate program utilizes case scenarios to demonstrate evidence-based interventions and ensure patient-centered approaches. Video demonstrations of devices, visual displays, and a package of placebo devices enhance the hands-on learning experience. The learner acquires practice in adjusting pharmacotherapeutic asthma regimens, counseling patients on tobacco cessation, and improving inhaler device technique. An individual feedback session is included. This certificate program provides a toolbox of interventions to assist pharmacists in optimizing treatments for their patients with asthma. Supporting materials located in the online classroom help health professionals to remain current.

At the completion of this certificate program, learners should be able to:
1. Obtain, interpret, and evaluate patient information to determine the presence of a disease or medical condition, assess the need for treatment and/or referral;
Interpret spirometry and peak flow reports, patient’s dependence on tobacco, inhaler device utilization and errors;
2. Using national treatment guidelines, identify, evaluate and communicate with the patient or health-care provider to optimize the patient’s specific pharmacotherapeutic agents, dosing regimens, dosage forms, routes of administration, and delivery systems;
Evaluate patient understanding and adherence through the use of asthma action plans, tobacco cessation tools, and counseling on inhaler device technique;
3. Manage and monitor drug regimens through implanting step-up, step-down therapy and other disease management techniques;
4. Calculate asthma controller ration and predicated peak flow measures; and
5. Identify patient-specific factors that affect health, pharmacotherapy, and/or disease management.
