Chemotherapy-Induced Nausea and Vomiting (CINV): Strategies for Optimizing Oncology Nursing Care

Access Activity

Overview / Abstract:

Chemotherapy-Induced Nausea and Vomiting (CINV): Strategies for Optimizing Oncology Nursing Care is a free, case-based, online activity designed to improve the knowledge and competence of oncology nursing professionals who care for patients with or who are at risk of developing chemotherapy induced nausea and vomiting (CINV). As the etiology of CINV has been better defined, advances have been made in prevention and management of this common side effect. While new agents have expanded treatment options, novel agents are still needed, especially in the areas of delayed, breakthrough, and refractory symptoms, the management of nausea, and the treatment of patients who receive multiday chemotherapy. Some of these issues may be addressed by implementing new dosing strategies and regimens using currently available agents. Education is needed to increase awareness that the problem of CINV continues in many patients and to improve knowledge about available treatments and guidelines and how to apply them.

After completing this activity, learners should be better able to:

• Perform pretreatment assessments of patient-specific and regimen-specific risk factors for CINV

• Make recommendations for the prevention of CINV based upon assessments and current management options
