Medical Spanish For the Healthcare Professional

Overview / Abstract:
The Spanish speaking population has grown tremendously over the past few decades and healthcare providers in many areas of the country are challenged to communicate with this expanding patient population.The goal of this conference is to teach basic, intermediate and advanced Medical Spanish language skills in the classroom and to implement the usage of these skills with native Spanish speakers in an immersion setting. At the conclusion of this conference, participants should be able to improve their knowledge of Medical Spanish with a minimum of the ability to converse and take basic medical histories from Spanish speaking patients and have the ability to give simple commands and instructions to this patient population. Intermediate and Advanced students will focus on improving their knowledge of Medical vocabulary and use of verbs and proper tenses.

Monday (5 Seminar Hours)
7:30-10:00am
Introductions and skills assessment. Basic Medical history questions.
4:00-6:30pm
Medically related Spanish words and expressions for pain, body parts, discomfort and medical symptoms.
Tuesday (5 Seminar Hours)
7:30-10:00am
Mock clinic to practice instruction.
4:00-6:30pm
Spanish phrasing for performing specific physical tasks and verbal commands in emergency situations.

Wednesday (No Classroom Time)
Time to enjoy the beauty of Costa Rica and interact with the native Spanish speakers. Many of the tours from the hotel for zip lining, canopy, volcano and deep-sea fishing require a full day commitment. This day will give you the time to schedule these activities.

Thursday (5 Seminar Hours)
7:30-10:00am
Pregnancy and delivery, commands, and specialty specific questions submitted by students.
4:00-6:30pm
Mock clinic to practice instruction.
Friday (5 Seminar Hours)
7:30am-12:30pm
Relating medical tests and their results.
Review of topics learned.

Closing remarks and course evaluation.
