The Multidisciplinary Assessment and Management of CVD Risk in HIV Infection

Access Activity

Overview / Abstract:

This text-based interview is the second of a four-part series. Dr. Priscilla Hsue and Dr. E. Turner Overton discuss the multidisciplinary management of CVD risk in HIV-positive individuals. Discussion topics include risk assessment tools, and collaboration across the care team, including the role of PCPs and specialist referrals.

HIV-infected individuals have an increased risk of CVD. Research has identified characteristics of HIV infection itself that influence CVD risks, yet their precise roles and potential as therapeutic targets are unclear. Initiation of ART and management of traditional CVD risk factors are paramount to reducing risk, but additional strategies are needed.

Upon completion of this activity, participants will be able to:
• Discuss CVD risks in HIV-patients and the importance of early initiation of ART
• Apply available CVD risk screening tools to HIV-positive patients
• Outline the role of the multidisciplinary care team in the assessment and management of CVD risks in HIV-infected patients

This activity is designed for cardiologists, infectious disease specialists, primary care physicians, and other clinicians interested in the management of patients with HIV-related cardiovascular disease.
