Therapy Selection in HIV-infected Patients with CVD Risks: A Case-based Discussion

Access Activity

Overview / Abstract:

In this case-based discussion, Dr. Longenecker and Dr. Okeke discuss therapy selection for HIV-positive individuals at-risk for CVD. Topics include the importance of early initiation of ART, selecting ART for HIV-positive individuals with dyslipidemia, considerations for viral suppression in the setting of CVD risk factors, and ongoing clinical trials. This is the third activity of a four-part series.

Upon completion of this activity, participants will be able to:
• Discuss CVD risks in HIV-patients and the importance of early initiation of ART
• Formulate ART regimens that account for potential drug-drug interactions and CVD-related adverse effects of ART

HIV-infected individuals have an increased risk of CVD. Research has identified characteristics of HIV infection itself that influence CVD risks, yet their precise roles and potential as therapeutic targets are unclear. Initiation of ART and management of traditional CVD risk factors are paramount to reducing risk, but additional strategies are needed.

This activity is designed for cardiologists, infectious disease specialists, primary care physicians, and other clinicians interested in the management of patients with HIV-related cardiovascular disease.
