Patient-Centered Care of Metastatic Colon and Rectal Cancer

Access Activity

Overview / Abstract:

This educational activity is directed toward oncology nurses and nurse practitioners who have expressed a need for educational programming on the coordination of care, management of adverse events, counseling and education, and patient follow-up in metastatic colon and rectal cancer (mCRC). Such education would allow these healthcare professionals to take on leadership roles in the multi-disciplinary care of mCRC, leading to improved patient outcomes.

Learning Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, the participant will be able to:
-Plan the scheduling and documentation of the mCRC workup, including examination, imaging studies, and pathology assessments that enable staging, tumor grade, and tumor markers such as KRAS, NRAS, BRAF, and dMMR/MSI-H
-Participate in the selection of chemotherapy, molecularly targeted therapy, and immunotherapy for mCRC, via shared decision making and multidisciplinary-team communication
-Manage the toxicities of all forms of mCRC therapy, via patient education, early recognition of adverse events, grading and documentation, dose-adjustment, patient counseling, and supportive care
-Attain ONS competencies, notably in domains of communication and organization, to facilitate a patient-centric approach to care in the mCRC setting
