Translating Recent Research into Clinical Decisions for C. difficile: Selection of Therapy

Access Activity

Overview / Abstract:

In this text-based interview, Dr. Sahil Khanna will review recent published studies and data from national meetings that may impact selection of therapy for C. difficile and its recurrence. In addition to his own research, Dr. Khanna will review highlights from IDWeek 2017, ACG2017, and the International C. diff. Awareness Conference and Health EXPO. This is the fourth in a series of five CME activities on CDI to be released in 2017.

Clostridium difficile infection (CDI) is associated with significant morbidity and mortality. Further, recurrence of CDI is common after an initial episode. Although a number of therapies with varying mechanisms of action, are available to treat CDI and prevent recurrence, the management of recurrent CDI is complex and challenging. Clinicians require up-to-date knowledge of evidence-based treatment of recurrent CDI to reduce its burden and improve clinical outcomes.

Upon completion of this activity, participants will be able to:
• Discuss advances in the understanding of recurrent C. difficile
• Interpret recent data on the use of antimicrobial agents and biologics for the treatment of recurrent C. difficile infection
• Outline evidence-based approaches for the management of initial and recurrent episodes of C. difficile

This activity is intended for gastroenterologists, infectious disease specialists, and other healthcare professionals that treat C. difficile infections.
