Dermatology Update

Access Activity

Overview / Abstract:

Audience:
This program is designed for primary care physicians, physician assistants and nurse practitioners. Nurses and other members of the care team may also find it beneficial.

Conference Overview:
Early screening and diagnosis of skin cancer, as well as many other dermatological conditions, starts in the primary care office. Effective care for a patient’s skin requires having a keen diagnostic eye to differentiate rashes from lesions and unknown growths from benign moles.

Primary care clinicians also need to understand how allergies, drug interactions, irritants and a patient’s immune system and genetic makeup all contribute to the cause and severity of a skin condition. Knowing the latest treatment options and medications is necessary to provide suitable
and cost-effective therapies.

Dermatology Update helps primary care clinicians better evaluate, diagnose and treat dermatologic conditions. The program format includes practical case-based lectures, time for dialogue with the presenters, “how-to” approaches to patient assessment and management, and strategies for making referrals. To encourage participation and active learning, this program includes our interactive audience response system (ARS).

Educational Objectives:
Following this learning activity, participants will be able to:
•- Evaluate diagnostic and treatment options for dermatological conditions, such as acne, actinic keratosis, dermatitis, fungal infections, moles and psoriasis
- Advise patients about appropriate over-the-counter products and prescription medications for common dermatologic conditions
- Identify when to treat a dermatological condition and when to refer to a specialist
