ICDAS: TOOTH-FRIENDLY APPROACH TO CLINICAL CARIES EVALUATION

Access Activity

Overview / Abstract:

Understanding of demineralization and remineralization process has been undergoing dramatic changes due to the emergence of new research. Dental caries formation is no longer a black and white process that requires surgical intervention in all cases. The existing caries classification does not appear to be sensitive enough to reflect these changes. Many entities currently search for a better, more prevention-friendly way to evaluate clinical caries. One of the new approaches, a widely recognized system called International Clinical Caries Management System (ICCMS) was developed as the result of international effort of The ICDAS Foundation. The new caries management system aligns contemporary understanding of the caries formation process with the preventive approach to oral health. The system uses ICDAS to classify caries lesions depending on their extent, location, and activity and allows for precise monitoring of caries development as well as for customized approach to prevention and/or restoration of lesions. As mentioned above, existing clinical caries nomenclature can no longer be practiced due to its deficiencies in caries prevention. Dental hygiene professionals are the prevention specialist and often at the front lines of oral diseases prevention. They need a reliable tool to classify, follow up, and address caries lesions at any stages of their formation. This course will assist dental hygienists in understanding the new system, refresh their knowledge of caries formation and provide suggestions regarding clinical utilization of ICDAS.
