The Role of Emergency Department Clinicians in Helping End the HIV Epidemic: Focus on nPEP and PrEP

Access Activity

Overview / Abstract:

Although HIV care has historically been considered outside of the scope of practice of emergency department (ED) clinicians, the members of the ED team now have the opportunity to play a key role in United States (US) efforts toward “Ending the Epidemic.” To maximize this role will require further developing their knowledge and skills regarding HIV prevention strategies such as post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) and pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP), putting protocols in place within the ED that facilitate their use, and building relationships with HIV providers in the community with whom they can link patients after leaving the ED.

Learning Objectives
Upon completing this activity, learners should be better able to:

1. Review the principles, drug options, and strategies for navigating key clinical issues regarding non-occupational post-exposure prophylaxis (nPEP) in the emergency department/urgent care setting

2. Explore communication strategies for counseling individuals about nPEP to improve adherence and ensure they are linked to follow-up care

3. Discuss pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) guidelines and studies, as well as how to identify potential PrEP candidates in the emergency room/urgent care setting
