Overview / Abstract:

Target Audience

This activity is designed to meet the educational needs of family practice physicians, primary care physicians, nurse practitioners, and physician assistants involved in the diagnosis and management of patients with influenza.

Program Overview

Seasonal influenza has a significant socioeconomic impact, with several patient populations at high risk of complications. This podcast will provide the latest updates in the prevention and management of influenza and insights into opportunities for improved patient care, considerations for diagnostic testing, and efficacy and safety of antivirals.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, participants should be better able to:

Recommend age-appropriate vaccines to reduce the risk of influenza complications
Identify patients at high risk of complications from influenza
Select safe and effective antiviral treatment strategies

Dr. Charles P. Vega Jr is Health Sciences Clinical Professor of Family Medicine and Assistant Dean for Culture and Community Education at the University of California (UC), Irvine, School of Medicine. He also serves as Executive Director of the UC Irvine Program in Medical Education for the Latino Community (PRIME-LC). Dr. Vega earned his medical degree from the University of Wisconsin in Madison before completing a family medicine residency at UC Irvine. Additionally, he is a Fellow of the American Academy of Family Physicians.

Dr. Vega’s academic interests are focused on access to quality, compassionate medical care for underserved populations, and the development of training programs to promote this vision of health care. In 2014, he was awarded a Macy Faculty Scholarship to improve patient-centered health education at UC Irvine. Dr. Vega has been invited to present at over 200 regional and national conferences on medical topics, medical education, and diversity and cultural effectiveness. He has authored over 1000 continuing medical education reviews and is a member of the California Medical Association, National Hispanic Medical Association, the American Academy of Family Physicians, and the California Academy of Family Physicians. Dr. Vega serves on the editorial boards of the Journal of Family Practice and Women’s Health, and the Family Medicine Advisory Board of Medscape, Inc. He is also a reviewer for the Journal of the American Board of Family Medicine and American Family Physician.

Dr. John J. Russell is a Clinical Professor of Family and Community Medicine at the Sidney Kimmel Medical College at Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He earned his medical degree from the Pennsylvania State College of Medicine in Hershey. He then completed a residency in Family Practice at Abington Memorial Hospital in Abington, Pennsylvania, where he currently serves as Chair of the Department of Family Medicine and Director of the Family Medicine Residency Program. Dr. Russell has held a number of leadership roles as a practicing physician, including serving as president of the Abington Memorial Hospital Medical Executive Committee. He has been Chairman of the Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee at Abington Memorial Hospital since 2005 and Co-Chair of the Bioethics Committee since 2001. Additionally, Dr. Russell is a Fellow of the American Academy of Family Physicians.

Dr. Russell has almost 30 years of experience presenting a variety of primary care and family medicine topics to primary care physicians at the regional and national level. He has delivered over 100 continuing medical education presentations on infectious diseases and immunizations, asthma, lipids, diabetes, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Since 2014, he has served as host of the “Clinician’s Roundtable and Book Club” on ReachMD™ (SiriusXM®/iHeartRadio). He also cohosts the monthly American Diabetes Association podcast, “Diabetes Core Update.” Dr. Russell has served as a contributing editor for several primary care publications and as a reviewer for and contributor to American Family Physician and Vaccine. He is the author or coauthor of multiple journal publications on family medicine topics, including adult immunizations, dermatology, and infectious diseases, and coauthor of the textbook, “Dermatology Skills for Primary Care: An Illustrated Guide.”
