Overview / Abstract:

Target Audience
The target audience includes primary care physicians, geriatric physicians, advanced practice nurses, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, consultant/senior care pharmacists, and other clinicians who care for older adults in various settings such as nursing facilities, long-term-care and assisted-living communities, continuing care retirement communities, home care, hospices, and programs that provide all-inclusive care for older patients.

Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this activity, participants should be better able to:

Summarize age-related changes in immunity that put older patients at high risk for shingles
Delineate complications of shingles that occur at higher rates in older patients
Compare and contrast administration and efficacy rates for available herpes zoster vaccinations
Devise approaches to improve healthcare provider communication with patients regarding the herpes zoster vaccine
Nursing Learning Outcomes
After completing this activity, the learner will demonstrate increased knowledge of the disease burden of shingles and outcome effective communication strategies to use with older patients about the benefits of the shingles vaccine.
