Asthma Evaluation and Management to Optimize Patient Outcomes

Program Overview
Patients with asthma are likely to present first in the primary care setting, thus affording primary care team members an opportunity to reduce the number of patients who are misdiagnosed and to support the correct use of inhalers and adherence. Asthma management is evolving, and evidence-based guidelines and interdisciplinary models of care can help individualize treatment and improve outcomes in patients with asthma. In this activity, members of the interprofessional team describe in their own voices the roles they play in managing patients with asthma and illustrate team practices that support optimal asthma outcomes.

Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this activity, participants should be better able to:

-Describe the initial evaluation of a patient with asthma while providing an outline criterion that help confirm a diagnosis of asthma
-Consider assessing a patient’s inhaler technique with new devices and regularly afterwards and educate patients about proper inhaler technique
-Discuss current guideline-recommended care models for patients with asthma while implementing interprofessional strategies to optimize management in patients with asthma
