Description & Objectives: |
Epilepsy care continues to evolve, requiring frequent updates of the newest information regarding treatment options. Three novel AEDs have been approved in the past five years, and there is important information regarding optimal use of older agents. Use of generic agents is increasing by insurer mandates; there are recent studies guiding the safe use of these. Newer, less invasive surgical techniques make it easier for many patients to be evaluated for epilepsy surgery, and laser ablation for appropriate patients has comparable efficacy to traditional resection with much faster recovery times. Knowledge regarding psychiatric problems and treatment in patients with epilepsy is also evolving.
This program will be of interest to practitioners who treat epilepsy patients and will comprised of didactic lectures and question and answer sessions. At the conclusion of this activity, participants will be better able to:
•Describe the properties of newer AEDs. •Practice appropriate referrals for epilepsy surgery. •Explain the properties of antidepressants and antianxiety agents.
