CONTENT SOURCE This continuing education activity captures content from a round table discussion. ACTIVITY DESCRIPTION The content featured in this supplement highlights the crucial role that optometrists play in educating patients with diabetes about the potential ocular complications of their systemic disorder, the additional care that must be addressed when undergoing ocular surgery (ie, cataract), and the benefits of diabetic eye exams and early treatment. TARGET AUDIENCE This certified continuing education (CE) activity is designed for optometrists involved in the management of retinal diseases.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, the participant should be able to:

  • Describe the increasing prevalence of diabetes and diabetic retinopathy
  • Identify and implement screening guidelines for patients based on their risk factors
  • Explain to patients the need for early referral to a retina specialist
  • Understand advances in imaging and how these allow for ear-lier diagnosis of disease or disease progression
  • Identify the novel therapies under investigation for the treatment of diabetic retinopathy and diabetic macular edema
