This presentation will review the increased audit and compliance risks and some recent settlements related to modifier 25. Medical record examples will be reviewed so attendees can learn how to analyze the medical record to determine if the E/M service is billable in addition to the minor procedure.

Elin Baklid-Kunz, MBA, CPC, CCS, works for Halifax Health in Daytona Beach, FL where she is responsible for implementing and maintaining compliance program elements related to the revenue cycle. Kunz has 14 years of healthcare experience, including seven years in finance. She is an adjunct professor at Seminole Community College where she teaches courses pertaining to healthcare reimbursement, and she serves on the advisory committee for the health information management program. She is also a freelance author for HCPro, Inc. writing e-learning courses for Born in Norway, she immigrated to the U.S. to pursue a college education. Kunz earned her master’s degree in business administration from Stetson University and her bachelor’s degree in hospitality management from Florida International University. She is a Certified Professional Coder and Certified Coding Specialist, and a member of the Healthcare Compliance Association and the Healthcare Financial Management Association.
