Ethical And Legal Issues For Administrators

Overview / Abstract:

This course will examine the ethical principles of an administrator in the educational setting. Participants develop and refine the skills necessary to analyze and integrate constructive ethics into practices that lead to success. Emphasis is placed on the understanding and history of ethics, exploring the development of ethics, gaining an appreciation for the professionalism of ethics in action, analyzing the ethical and legal implications of issues that school administrators may face, and examining accountability factors related to ethics. Participants create their own personal code of ethics.

Understanding Ethics

Define the concept of ethics.
Review the historical development of ethical principles.
Contrast ethics, morals, values, and virtues.
Developing Ethics

Relate objective and subjective responsibility regarding administrative ethics.
Define obligations, moral ideals, and consequences.
Examine “The Great Conversation” and relate it’s applicability to ethical leadership today.
Professionalism

Analyze the value of professionalism related to conflicts of authority, role conflicts, and conflicts of interest.
Examine the relationship between actions and consequences pertaining to ethical decisions as a school administrator.
Describe internal and external controls and the effect they have on maintaining professionalism.
Analyze current ethical controversies in education.
Leadership Dilemmas and Ethics

Define the ethical and legal responsibilities of an administrator relative to Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964.
Analyze the ethical issues that arise for administrators in making employment decisions.
Determine the legal and ethical laws related to reporting incidents with students or staff.
Recommend measures to insure legal and ethical standards regarding use of technology at a school site.
Accountability

Define culpability regarding ethics.
Review codes of ethics and ethics legislation regarding an administrator’s accountability.
Discern between accountability and responsibility.
