The Role Of Women In Educational Leadership

Overview / Abstract:

This course explores the role of women in educational leadership. Participants learn how women’s paths to leadership differ from those of men, what the unique styles and skills of women in leadership are, and which motivation and communication strategies are effective for women. The course focuses on acknowledging, developing, and expanding women’s leadership skills and on developing plans to mentor women to take on educational leadership roles. It concludes with a section on how women can lead organizational change.

Note: This course is beneficial for both male and female leaders.

Women in Educational Leadership: Overview

Distinguish between the paths women and men take to leadership.
Profile the natural leadership talents of women.
Analyze the ways in which women lead.
Describe the paradigm shift in educational leadership and how it mirrors female leadership.
Women in Educational Leadership: Administration

Outline the historical representation of women in school leadership roles.
Analyze the data on educational leadership research regarding gender.
Differentiate between distributed leadership and collective leadership.
Women in Educational Leadership: Motivation

Evaluate the motivational values in using collective leadership.
Explain how relational leadership, social justice leadership, and leadership for learning motivate others in a school community.
Analyze the role of passion in motivating self and others.
Women in Educational Leadership: Communication

Illustrate the seven networks and seven core layers of knowledge related to leadership roles for women.
Apply the “ladder of inference” as a communication tool.
Analyze the effectiveness and power in networking for women leaders.
Apply a woman’s methods of communicating for understanding.
Women in Educational Leadership: Organizational Change

Identify the leadership challenges that face women.
Differentiate results in top-down or inclusive leadership styles for men and women.
Analyze gender similarities and differences in leading for organizational change.
Explain how women can use power to influence organizational change.
Develop plans to mentor women to take on educational leadership roles.
