The Portrait

Access Activity

Overview / Abstract:

The Portrait is a course about a tradition thousands of years old. Students acquire knowledge-based ways of seeing and learn to apply authentic perceptual principles to their own work without losing their unique form of expression. Students follow a sequential program designed to familiarize them with the essential skill of seeing using oils, pastel, or charcoal. Shape recognition, edges, light values, atmospheric perspective, and color temperature as applied to portraiture are covered. Issues of scale, drawing with paint, understanding chroma, achieving a likeness, and the anatomy and features of the head are also discussed. In at least ten out of twelve classes we will have models. There is no prerequisite. Start working at your own level. Limited to 16. Open to Non-Credit and Certificate Students. Open to Degree students with permission of program
