Survey of Post-Genre Music

Access Activity

Overview / Abstract:

Post-genre music represents a fundamental shift in the way music is categorized and talked about. Rather than viewing music as having a fixed purpose and a collective sense of progress, post-genre music defines musical creation an individual effort guided by hyper-personal experience and interests. In other words, post-genre is NOT, itself, a genre - but a refutation of the very notion of genre. Survey of Post-Genre Music will focus specifically on the here and now, treating New York City as an active petri dish for this blossoming musical worldview. This class will be taught by William Brittelle, composer and co-director of the groundbreaking organizations New Amsterdam Records and New Amsterdam Presents. In addition, special guests will relay their personal musical journeys within the larger context of the New York scene, and share practical advice about developing a sustainable musical career in a turbulent industry. The course will also touch on practical issues of modern post-genre music - distribution, metadata, publicity - all made more complicated by the conservatism still present the industry's standard best practices. This course is the introductory course for the minor in Post-Genre Music: Performance and Creation, and meets at the Greenwich Village New School Campus.
