Overview / Abstract:

Program Summary:
Learn about AIDS-defining infections and the general guidelines to delay or prevent occurrences. The content is organized into three broad sections:

-Section One describes some of the more common co-infections, including hepatitis and STDs;
-Section Two discusses opportunistic, AIDS-defining infections, including those that are bacterial, fungal, viral, and parasitical, as well as several malignancies; and
-Section Three provides general guidelines to delay or prevent occurrences of these infections.
Successional Courses: HIV/AIDS: Prevention, Transmission, and Exposure Support and HIV/AIDS: Clinical Management and Treatment Protocols

Certificate of Completion will be available immediately on-line upon successful completion by the participant.

Upon successful completion of this course, the participant will be able to:

-Describe co-infections that complicate HIV infection.
-Describe common AIDS-defining illnesses, their diagnosis, and treatments.
-Describe lifestyle behaviors that delay (or prevent) AIDS-defining illnesses.

Author Information:
-Jeffrey P. Garrett, MSN, ARNP, FNP-BC is a current member of the American Academy of HIV Medicine, Jeffery brings to this course his experience and knowledge from the last 15 years of practice devoted to infectious diseases with a special interest in research and treatment of viral infections including: HIV, viral hepatitis and herpes virus disease. He has been with the Orlando Immunology Center since 2011 and has updated this course with the latest information on HIV and AIDS. He received his ARNP/FNP with a Master’s of Science in Nursing from Florida State University College of Nursing, Bachelors of Science in Nursing – Summa cum Laude from Florida Hospital College of Health Sciences, and his Associate Degree in Nursing (RN Track) High Honors from Seminole State College. He also is a member of the Association of Nurses in AIDS Care, CCNIP, and the prestigious Sigma Theta Tau Honor Society of Nursing.

-Rilla Taylor, EdD, MN, RN is a registered nurse, and nurse educator. She has a M.N. in Medical Surgical Nursing and a doctorate in Educational Administration. She has 15 years of experience directing the nursing education program at the Kanye Hospital, Botswana, Africa as well as over 20 years of experience as a professor for Andrews University. Dr. Taylor is presently an adjunct professor for Adventist University of Health Sciences, Orlando, Florida.
