Strategies for Preventing HIV-related Cardiovascular Disease

Access Activity

Overview / Abstract:

This text-based interview is the first of a four-part series. Dr. Chris Longenecker and Dr. Turner Overton address CVD risks in HIV-infected individuals, such as contributing factors for CVD (inflammation and immune activation), the impact of antiretroviral drug treatment (ART), risk factor modification, and ongoing clinical trials.

HIV-infected individuals have an increased risk of CVD. Research has identified characteristics of HIV infection itself that influence CVD risks, yet their precise roles and potential as therapeutic targets are unclear. Initiation of ART and management of traditional CVD risk factors are paramount to reducing risk, but additional strategies are needed.

Upon completion of this activity, participants will be able to:
• Discuss CVD risks in HIV-patients and the importance of early initiation of ART
• Outline the contributions of HIV infection to cardiovascular risks
