Overview / Abstract: |
This course will provide the speech language pathologist with a comprehensive approach to help teens and adults who stutter learn new ways to manage their disfluent speech. A comprehensive approach refers to teaching speech management tools to make the stuttering less annoying and at the same time help the person change negative attitudes and emotions and move forward with life. The course begins with a description of stuttering and useful models of stuttering origin and treatment. We briefly discuss assessment and then proceed into treatment, beginning with prerequisite considerations. We then cover goals, introduce a useful framework for thinking about treatment, introduce speech management tools, and cover approaches to help change attitudes and emotions and move toward acceptance. We will also discuss medications and stuttering, electronic speech aids, and support groups and podcast programs. A special section of the course will deal with the specific challenges presented by teens who stutter. The course ends with four case studies of adult and teen clients who stutter. |
