LEARNING IMPLANT DENTISTRY FOR THE RESTORATIVE DENTIST - PART I

Overview / Abstract:

SYNOPSIS:

Successful implant osseointegration is well documented over the past forty years. Implant dentistry has not been formally presented in dental school from the mid 2000's, until now. Our dental students at the Ostrow School of Dentistry are currently treatment planning, working with surgical residents in the placement of dental implants and are successfully restoring cement retained and screw retained restorations. This program will educate the dentist in the most predictable manner to learn and treat patient that have missing teeth with the dental implant and its restoration. Aspects of treatment planning will be discussed and compared with conventional dentistry vs implant dentistry. The participant will become knowledgeable about CT scan, radiographic and surgical guides, implant components, implant provisional restorations, and screw retained and cement retained restoration. This course is designed for those that wish to begin implant treatment for their patients and those that would like a better basic understanding of dental implants.
TOPICS TO BE COVERED:

Implant Introduction- history and types
CT Scans- reading and identifying structures and position of implants
Radiographic/Surgical Guides
Implant Components- screws, screw drivers and abutments
Implant position
Treatment Planning for simple implant restorations
Implant provisional restorations
Soft tissue management for implant restorations
Cement vs screw retained restorations
UPON COMPLETION YOU WILL BE ABLE TO:

Understand implant components with parts identification
Be able to discuss optimal implant position
Understand use and purpose of radiographic and surgical guide
Become familiar with treatment planning sequence for uncomplicated implant
Understand the financial implications of implants vs conventional dentistry
Know how to manipulate soft tissue around implant for best gingival architecture
Know the sequence for delivering the uncomplicated implant restoration
