Overview / Abstract:

At the conclusion of this session, the participant will be able to:

1. Review medications and lifestyle modifications that are recommended for the treatment of dyslipidemia.
2. Identify the patient populations that benefit from statin therapy according to consensus guidelines.
3. Discuss recommendations from the US Preventative Services Task Force for statin therapy in primary prevention.
4. Define the role in of nonstatin therapy in the treatment of dyslipidemia.
5. Compare and contrast evidence-based guidelines with other expert recommendations for lipid management.
6. Provide treatment regiments to manage patients with statin-associated muscle related side effects.
7. Review common statin drug-drug interactions.
8. Examine the PCSK9 inhibitors to describe their mechanism of action, role in therapy, and efficacy in treating patients with dyslipidemia.
9. Interpret results from large outcome studies evaluating nonstatin therapies.
10. Discuss the 2016 ACC Expert Consensus Decision Pathway on the Role of Non-Statin Therapies in the Management of Atherosclerotic Cardiovascular Disease Risk.
11. Explain when and how to treat hypertriglyceridemia.
