A Breath of Fresh Air: 2017 Global Initiative for Asthma (GINA) Guidelines

Access Activity

Overview / Abstract:

The purpose of this course is to discuss the 2017 Global Initiative for Asthma (GINA) Guidelines for Management and Prevention of Asthma. Many institutions follow the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) guidelines for the treatment of asthma, however these guidelines have not been updated since 2007. We will be discussing the evidence which has since come out leading to recommendations included in the 2017 GINA guidelines. This includes a discussion of the diagnosis, treatment, and monitoring of patients with chronic asthma. Asthma is an expensive and potentially debilitating disease and pharmacists can play a role in reducing the burden of both symptoms and cost to patients. After completion of this course, pharmacists will be able to use this information to help with decision-making for initiation and adjustment of asthma therapy.

At the completion of this activity, the participant should be able to:

-Describe the elements necessary for diagnosis and assessment of asthma based on recommendations in GINA 2017
-Identify techniques for improving treatment and minimizing risk factors for asthma exacerbations
-Discuss pharmacologic recommendations for improving outcomes in patients with asthma
-Outline an individualized treatment plan based on patient-specific factors

This activity is designed to meet the educational needs of practicing pharmacists.
