Treating Low Back Pain without Opioids

Access Activity

Overview / Abstract:

Low-back pain is a common and disabling condition, with most individuals experiencing low-back pain at some point in their lives. In terms of overall worldwide burden, low-back pain ranked sixth out of the 291 conditions evaluated. The high disability linked to low-back pain is likely correlated with the increasing global prevalence, with 9.4% of the population experiencing back pain, translating to 83 million people in 2010. This proposed educational initiative will inform clinicians about the most recent guidelines and detail the nonpharmacologic solutions in a hierarchical model, intended to provide clinicians with the tools to appropriately manage acute low-back pain.

Intended Audience
Physicians, pain specialists, chiropractors, physical therapists, nurse practitioners and other health care professionals with an interest in treating acute non-specific lower back pain.

Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this activity, the participant should be able to:

Describe the role of non-pharmacologic management of acute lower back pain in the first-line setting.
Integrate thermal heat-based therapy into management plans for patients with acute low-back pain.
Discuss other evidence-based non-pharmacologic and noninvasive methods for treatment of acute low-back pain, including acupuncture, physical therapy and massage, and injections.
