Overview / Abstract:

COMPREHENSIVE HEALTH PREVENTION FOR OLDER ADULTS:

Attainment of optimal oral health and wellness is a challenging and dynamic process that occurs along the aging continuum. This course will present a new model of health prevention for older adults, with an emphasis on ensuring safety, minimizing disease risks, maintaining function, and optimizing oral health quality of life. Oral health care professionals will learn how to individualize preventive strategies to improve desired health outcomes for their elderly patients.

UPON COMPLETION PARTICIPANTS WILL BE ABLE TO:

Identify desired health outcomes of implemented preventive strategies in the older adult population.
Describe important variables that influence an individual’s ability to attain oral wellness.
Identify components of a preventive practice plan to ensure patient safety.
Discuss how lifelong habits contribute to oral and systemic health risks in elderly individuals.
Discuss how oral disease impacts oral health quality of life.
Discuss issues and concerns that must be considered when formulating a dental hygiene treatment plan for
prevention in older patients.

INSIGHTS INTO PERIODONTAL THERAPY:
Periodontal disease continues to be a significantly widespread oral health problem. Clinicians play a significant role in the management of this disease. Recent updates on categorizing periodontal disease provides a new framework to reexamine treatment planning and monitoring case management of periodontitis. This session focuses on non-surgical treatment strategies using current advances and best practices to optimize treatment outcomes.

TOPICS TO BE COVERED:

Describe the new AAP Classification of Periodontal and Peri-implant diseases and conditions
Discuss the medical model approach to periodontal disease management.
Apply emerging technology and techniques in periodontal therapy.
