Structural Heart Imaging by the Bay: Contemporary Approaches and Methods in Adult Clinical Practice

Overview / Abstract:

Structural heart intervention by trans-catheter technology has rapidly grown into a distinct subspecialty of cardiology over the last decade. This unprecedented ascent has been driven not only by advances in device technology, but largely due to advances in cardiac imaging, which now offers the spatial resolution and real-time anatomical detail to permit structural intervention without direct surgical visualization. Structural heart imaging, primarily employing CT and TEE, require additional time, training and knowledge, which are not conventionally taught in general cardiology fellowship and are often not part of routine clinical cardiovascular practice.
