Why Better Eating Matters: Practical Nutrition for Clinicians

Access Activity

Overview / Abstract:

Conference Overview:
Questions and concerns about healthy eating and how nutrition impacts health arise often in the office setting. To combat the long-term risks and excessive cost associated with obesity and malnutrition, primary care clinicians need knowledge and strategies to offer effective, evidence based nutrition counseling, care and support for patients. The care team should be familiar with resources that may help patients overcome barriers to eating healthy. These barriers may include the inability to access and afford nutritious foods.

Why Better Eating Matters: Practical Nutrition for Clinicians will explore how the care team can use the latest nutrition information, collaborate with dietitians and provide education and resources to optimize positive health outcomes. Local and regional experts will provide up-to-date, evidencebased information to explore and clarify the controversial issues related to diet and overall health.

Participants will receive access to an electronic pocket guide that:
- Outlines nutritional considerations for special populations such as athletes and patients with Crohn’s disease, gluten-sensitivity or irritable bowel syndrome
- Summarizes replacement protocols in post-bariatric patients
- Supports conversations on dietary precautions and notable restrictions of common diets
The conference format includes practical lectures on key areas of clinical practice and time for dialogue with the faculty.

Educational Objectives:
Following this learning activity, participants will be able to:
- Integrate into clinical practice current evidence on the impact of nutrition on health
- Explain the effect of the food environment and social factors on patient and family nutrition
- Provide resources and referrals that support better eating
- Discuss barriers and nutritional considerations for special populations such as patients with diabetes
