Overview / Abstract: |
To meet the pain needs of patients and minimize opioid prescribing, the Orthopedic Trauma Association has released new acute pain guidelines that emphasize precise prescribing within multimodal treatment plans that integrate non-opioid medications, cognitive strategies, and physical strategies such as immobilization, ice, elevation, and physical therapy. Not meant to be a one-size-fits-all standard of treatment, physicians should use the guidelines as a starting point when practicing the art of medicine. The opioid epidemic is a complex issue, and combatting this crisis not only requires responsible prescribing – including limiting the amount of opioids used and alternative treatments – but also requires a personal approach, remembering that there is a whole person attached to the pain, and discussions on other issues needing treatment are key to providing the patient with the best pain management plan. In this free CME Snack, Dr. Gold and Dr. Mir focus on the management of pain in an orthopedic setting. Orthopedic surgeons’ prescribing of opioids is disproportionate to the size of their specialty. |
