How to Develop and Lead a Journal Club Activity at Your APPE Site

Access Activity

Overview / Abstract:

Journal clubs have long been used to teach critical evaluation of the literature, keep practitioners up-to-date, and improve clinical practice. However, journal clubs can suffer from a lack of focus and poorly defined goals, failure to discuss the clinical application of the articles, and lengthy presentations and discussions. While journal clubs are often a required activity, it can be difficult to make a journal club presentation meaningful if only one student and preceptor are at a rotation site. This course provides tips on how to make journal clubs more meaningful in any setting, from defining goals to selecting impactful articles to applying adult learning principles. Hear strategies on how to standardize presentations and use literature evaluation checklists to make this exercise more effective in your APPE!
