Overview / Abstract:

Course description
This course is designed to provide the LPN (licensed practical nurse) with a comprehensive foundational knowledge in IV therapy practice, including managing CV lines.

This course meets the 30-hour IV therapy education requirement set forth in the FBON Nurse Practice Act (Chapter 64B9-12.004, Page 93-96) for LPNs practicing IV Therapy in the State of Florida.

Target audience
This course is designed for licensed practical nurses.

Learning objectives
After the completion of this course, the learner should be able to:

-Discuss the LPN’s role in IV therapy, IV infusions, and managing central lines as identified in the Florida Nurse Practice Act (NPA) and your facility or agency’s’ policies and procedures;
-Identify the importance of integrating the psychological preparation of the patient and family into the IV therapy process;
-Recognize the legalities involved in providing intravenous therapy and IV infusion;
-Describe the anatomy and physiology involved in initiating, maintaining and discontinuing peripheral and central IV therapy including fluid and electrolyte balance and the importance of PSI;
-List indications for selecting each type of IV access including a heparin lock;
-Outline the procedure for inserting and maintaining intravenous therapy via peripheral and central sites and venous access ports (VAPs) including the formulas to calculate rates of administration of fluids;
-Identify complications and appropriate interventions of IV therapy including the related signs and symptoms;
-List the information that must be included in patient and family teaching;
-Discuss parenteral nutrition;
-Describe the role of the LPN in the administration of IV medications including chemotherapy;
-Verbalize information on blood transfusions including the indications, types of reactions, complications and the role of the LPN in administration of blood and blood products;
-Discuss appropriate documentation of IV therapy and blood transfusions;
-Demonstrate clinical application of knowledge and skills of IV therapy as defined by FL BON under the supervision of a Florida licensed RN.

Method of participation
This course utilizes a video and printed materials as a basis for the course. In order to receive credit, participants should view the entire video, read the downloadable monograph, complete evaluation and score at least 70% on the post test. Additionally, the LPN must print the downloadable Skills Checklist and complete this under the supervision of a Florida licensed RN. AKH Inc. allows for one (1) re-test at no additional charge; additional re-tests must be purchased for $55. To meet the Florida State Board of Nursing requirements for an LPN IV Therapy Certificate, the LPN must:

Watch entire video
Read monograph, print and complete post test using the answer sheet provided in the monograph
Print the skills checklist and complete under the supervision of a Florida licensed RN
Complete online evaluation form
Return post test and skills checklist to AKH Inc. using the options below.

She recently completed her PhD in Nursing Education at Nova Southeastern University.
