High Functioning Autism in Children

Access Activity

Overview / Abstract:

High Functioning Autism in Children is a 4-hour online continuing education (CE/CEU) course that provides strategies to help children with HFA navigate the "neurotypical" world with success.

According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, as of April 2018, the prevalence of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is increasing. This increase includes children on the higher end of the spectrum; those who have what is informally referred to as “high functioning” ASD. In this course we will use the term “HFA” and explore and discuss why children and adolescents with HFA behave the way they do.

Professionals will learn strategies for helping parents manage their child with HFA at home, particularly toward learning the skills required to set themselves up for success, ease transitions, and prevent meltdowns. Interventions for school success will encompass organizational skills and strategies to improve language, narratives, reading comprehension, writing, and attention skills.

Finally, children with HFA struggle socially, particularly with understanding the unspoken rules of social situations. Professionals will learn to assist children with the development of social skills, which include conversational skills so that they may better relate to their peers, and how to interpret the hidden curriculum in many different environments. Professionals can help their clients discover their strengths, while harnessing their capabilities, allowing them to navigate the "neurotypical" world with success.
