This session was voted by attendees and the ACTHIV conference planning committee as one of the “Best of ACTHIV”. The 13th Annual American Conference for the Treatment of HIV (ACTHIV) was held April 11-13, 2019 in Miami, FL.

The 13th Annual American Conference for the Treatment of HIV (ACTHIV) was held April 11-13, 2019 in Miama, FL. The Conference was supported by the Clinical Education Initiative, New York State Department of Health, AIDS Institute.

At the completion of this educational activity, participants will:
-Describe the rationale for HIV treatment in all PLWH.
-Describe the principles of ART initiation including laboratory evaluation and drug classes.
-Review emerging concepts such as rapid ART initiation and two-drug ART.

Babafemi Taiwo, MBBS, is the Gene Stollerman Professor of Medicine and Chief, Division of Infectious Diseases at Northwestern University, Chicago.

Babafemi Taiwo, MBBS is a Professor of Medicine at Northwestern University. He received his MBBS from Nigeria’s University of Ibadan College of Medicine, he trained at the University of Massachusetts Berkshire Medical Center. Dr. Taiwo went on to complete subspecialty training in Infectious Diseases at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine before joining the faculty. He won the John Carey Young Investigator Award in 2009 in recognition of his contributions to research on HIV resistance and management of co-infections. His expertise in novel therapies and the implementation of clinical research in resource-limited settings serve a critical function in ACTG leadership. As chair of multiple ACTG protocols and committees, he has contributed to important advancements in HIV research and clinical care.
