Office Procedures Update

Access Activity

Overview / Abstract:

Conference Overview:
Basic medical procedures are increasingly being performed in primary care clinics rather than solely in ambulatory surgical centers or hospitals. New techniques allow rapid assessment and treatment with less scarring. Frequently neglected in residency training, various procedural skills, such as skin biopsies and advanced suturing, require review and practice.

Primary care clinicians face daily pressure to decrease operating costs and adjust to lower reimbursements, while maintaining quality services and patient satisfaction. Performing common, inexpensive procedures in the clinic may help ease scheduling and patient demand. Office-based surgical procedures also extend patients’ continuity of care with their primary care clinicians and support appropriate use of surgical specialists. Learn the latest evidence-based guidelines, techniques and equipment used in various primary care office surgeries at the Office Procedures Update. View demonstrations and discuss practical and efficient methods to better understand the skills and tools needed to confidently perform procedures in an office setting.

Educational Objectives:
Following this learning activity, participants will be able to:
- Apply strategies to manage injuries and control infection
- Initiate appropriate patient consults and referrals
- Describe and evaluate best practices for common office procedures, such as biopsies, burn and bite management, dislocations and reductions, foreign body removals from eyes, joint and soft-tissue injections, and/or lower- or upper-extremity splinting
