Psychiatry Update for Primary Care

Access Activity

Overview / Abstract:

Conference Overview:
About 25 percent of adults and 20 percent of children are diagnosable for one or more mental health conditions, such as depression or anxiety. Major depressive disorder is the leading cause of disability among Americans, according to the World Health Organization. Lack of practical tools for detection, insufficient time at office visits and ineffective treatments can contribute to poor outcomes for patients who have mental health conditions. The presence of another illness or disease often further complicates detection of mental health conditions. The prevalence and complex nature of mental health conditions clearly necessitate new approaches for diagnosing, treating and monitoring these conditions in the primary care setting.

Psychiatry Update for Primary Care will feature practical assessment and treatment advice on selected topics in child, adolescent and adult mental health. The format includes lectures, panel discussions and time for dialogue with the presenters. Participants can choose to attend one or both days.

Educational Objectives:
Following this learning activity, participants will be able to:
- Discuss evidence-based strategies for diagnosing and managing common mental health conditions
- Determine individualized treatment, care coordination and follow-up for patients with mental health conditions
- Apply appropriate pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic treatments in patients with mental health conditions
