Overview / Abstract: |
Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) provides an interesting challenge to pharmacists involved in interdisciplinary teams developing individualized care plan for patients. Despite ALS being described almost 150 years ago, there has been little advancement in pharmacological treatment for this devastating disease. Despite the lack of many treatment options, pharmacists are required to have a strong grasp of the disease landscape to make an impact for both patients and caregivers. Given that most pharmacy curricula spend little to no time on ALS, this program will serve to refresh core concepts of the disorder for new practitioners such as pathophysiology and epidemiology, prognosis, and patient education, as well as update experienced clinicians on the management options available to ALS patients (both pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic). As a result of this program, pharmacists will be positioned to identify areas of impact for patients and caregivers such as disease burden and quality of life. Learning Objectives Describe relevant background such as pathophysiology and epidemiology of ALS. Identify the diagnostic criteria used in clinical practice for ALS. Discuss current recommended pharmacotherapy and non-therapeutic interventions for the treatment of ALS. Recognize the role of the pharmacist as part of the interdisciplinary care team for ALS patients. |
