LIPOHYPERTROPHY

Access Activity

Overview / Abstract:

With the market of injectable medications growing rapidly, it is important that patients understand how to properly inject their medications to prevent adverse events. Lipohypertrophy, otherwise known as a form of lipodystrophy, is a common adverse effect associated with injecting insulin. As one of the most trusted professionals, pharmacists have the unique opportunity to educate patients about this adverse effect.

Lipohypertrophy is commonly caused by needle reuse and improper site rotation, pharmacists have a great opportunity to intervene and prevent lipohypertrophy. It is easy to prevent lipohypertrophy, but it is necessary that patients are given appropriate education regarding injection technique and steps to prevent lipohypertrophy. Lipohypertrophy may be prevented by using a new needle with each injection and practicing proper site rotation. Pharmacists should identify all injecting patients and ensure that they understand proper site rotation and use a new needle with each injection.

After this course you will be able to educate patients about lipohypertrophy: causes, what to watch for, how to monitor, understand the steps to prevent lipohypertrophy, and identify and assess lipohypertrophy in your patients. A brief patient case as well as questions throughout the session will allow you to apply your knowledge of lipohypertrophy.
