COVID-19: The Novel Coronavirus

Access Activity

Overview / Abstract:

Note: On March 14, 2020, CDC reported that COVID-19 is similar to the 1918 Spanish flu in terms of how rapidly it has spread across the globe. Although it is difficult to determine exact case-fatality rates (because data is calculated differently by different countries and agencies), the coronavirus appears to have a case-fatality rate similar to that of the Spanish flu. To learn more about the coronavirus, please continue with this course. To learn more about influenza and the 1918 Spanish flu pandemic, please go to our Flu 2020 course.

The appearance of the novel COVID-19 virus in Wuhan, China made international headlines around the globe. This course presents those first few months when the virus began to appear in other nations and talk of a potential pandemic arose. Through illustrations and discussion we present the new virus (initially called 2019-nCoV) and how it has burst upon the scene. Upcoming events will be covered in quotes at the outset of the course.
