Overview / Abstract: |
Early diagnosis is key to improving outcomes in patients with multiple sclerosis (MS). Initiating disease-modifying therapy (DMT) as soon as possible is important in controlling disease symptoms, mitigating disease progression/preventing relapse, and minimizing disease-related disability. A deeper understanding of the pathophysiology of MS has revolutionized the DMT landscape, offering patients 16 approved therapies. However, difficulties ensuring an accurate diagnosis and clinical uncertainties with individualizing therapies may preclude MS patients from reaping the optimal benefits of therapy and could subject misdiagnosed patients to unnecessary, potentially harmful effects of treatment. Patients also report suboptimal levels of shared decision-making, a crucial component to managing MS as a chronic disease and promoting lifelong treatment adherence. "Staying Up to Date with Advances in the Management of Multiple Sclerosis" will provide clinicians with a concise, but comprehensive, review of approved DMTs for MS, illustrations of appropriate assessments, determinations of MS subtypes, identifications of prognostic factors, and determinations of patients’ risks for progression. It will also provide communication techniques and patient-engagement strategies that enable clinician/patient collaboration and improve treatment compliance and patient QoL. |
