Target Audience

This activity is intended for pulmonologists, rheumatologists and any others who treat patients with SSc-ILD.

Program Overview

This program will highlight strategies for the diagnosis, treatment, and longitudinal management of SSc-ILD using a multidisciplinary approach.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, participants should be better able to:

Identify clinical features and risk factors of SSc-ILD based upon best practices for diagnosis.
Apply practice guidelines and clinical evidence related to current and emerging therapies to select treatments for patients with SSc-ILD.
Evaluate strategies for longitudinal management of SSc-ILD using a multidisciplinary approach.

Mehrnaz Maleki Fischbach, MD, is an Associate Professor, Department of Medicine, Division of Rheumatology, at National Jewish Health. Dr. Maleki Fischbach received her medical degree at Isfahan University of Medical Sciences. She completed her internal medicine residency at Michigan State University-McLaren Regional Medical Center where she was also a Research Fellow at the Chronic Pain and Fatigue Research Center. Dr. Maleki Fischbach completed her Rheumatology Fellowship at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Dr. Maleki Fischbach is Clinical Instructor at University of Colorado Denver and is a member of the American College of Rheumatology, the American College of Physicians and the Rocky Mountain Rheumatism Society. She has been published in Arthritis Research & Therapy (30 July 2010), New developments in osteoarthritis. Sex differences in magnetic resonance imaging-based biomarkers and in those of joint metabolism.

Dr. Maleki Fischbach is Program Chair for the Improving the Outcomes of Patients with Osteoporosis, the CME, CNE and dietitian CPE educational activity at National Jewish Health on December 8, 2015. She has also received two internal research awards from National Jewish Health.

Maria Luisa Padilla, MD, is Professor of Medicine and Director of the Advanced Lung Disease/ILD Program at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York, New York. She received her undergraduate degree at the City College of New York and received her medical degree at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York City. After completing her training as an intern and resident in Internal Medicine at Mount Sinai Hospital, Dr. Padilla pursued a fellowship in Pulmonary Medicine and Basic Science Research in Interstitial Lung Disease, also at Mount Sinai Hospital. She gained additional knowledge in Lung Transplantation and Cystic Fibrosis and directed the former Lung Transplant Program at Mount Sinai Hospital. She is a graduate of The Executive Leadership in Academic Medicine (ELAM). She is certified in Internal Medicine, Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine.

Dr. Padilla has investigated and lectured extensively on multiple aspects of pulmonary and critical care medicine. In addition to her clinical research on pulmonary fibrosis in which she participated on multiple trials that led to the FDA approval of antifibrotic therapy for IPF, sarcoidosis, and pulmonary hypertension, she has a very active pulmonary practice and consultation service and continues her teaching interests and clinical investigation (ongoing clinical trials) . Dr. Padilla is the recipient of several awards, including an Academic Award from National Institutes of Health (NIH), teaching awards, 2000 Physician of the Year Award, the Distinguished Service Award, and the Saul Horowitz Jr. Memorial Award, Jacobi Medallion at Mount Sinai Hospital. She has co-authored books on respiratory disorders and is the author or co-author of over 60 publications, presentations, and reports.

Dr. Jesse Roman is Ludwig Kind Professor of Medicine and Pharmacology & Experimental Therapeutics; Enterprise Division Chief for Pulmonary, Allergy and Critical Care Medicine; and Chief Executive Officer of the Jane & Leonard Korman Respiratory Institute – Jefferson Health and National Jewish Health in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Dr. Roman received his M.D. from the University Of Puerto Rico School Of Medicine in 1983. After undergoing training in Internal Medicine at the San Juan VA Medical Center in Puerto Rico, he joined the Pulmonary & Critical Care Medicine Fellowship Program at Washington University School of Medicine, St. Louis, Missouri. In 1991, Dr. Roman joined the faculty at Emory University where he became Professor and Division Chief (2002), co-founder and Director for Research of the Emory Interstitial Lung Diseases Program (2003), and AVP and Founding Director of the Emory Center for Respiratory Health (2007). In 2009, Dr. Roman became Professor, Distinguished University Scholar, and Chairman of the Department of Medicine at the University of Louisville, Kentucky, where he remained until his move to Philadelphia in 2018. Dr. Roman remains active in patient care, clinical trials, and basic science research in pulmonary fibrosis and interstitial lung disorders, and has written extensively in the areas of lung tissue remodeling and inflammation, and on the role of extracellular matrices in the control of cellular functions. He is the current Editor-In-Chief of the American Journal of the Medical Sciences.

Jeff Swigris, DO, MS is an Professor of Medicine and Director of the Interstitial Lung Disease (ILD) Program at National Jewish Health which is routinely recognized as one of the world’s top ILD programs. Dr. Swigris is regarded as a world expert in the assessment of symptoms and quality of life in patients with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis.

Dr. Swigris’ clinical duties include evaluating and caring for patients with or suspected to have diffuse parenchymal lung disease. His individual research program is focused on the measurement of symptoms and quality of life in patients with ILD and on developing interventions to improve these all-important outcomes.

He attended Quincy University (Illinois) for his undergraduate work, earning degrees in Mathematics and Biology in 1992. He graduated from the Ohio University College of Osteopathic Medicine in 1996. He completed his Internal Medicine residency at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation in Cleveland, Ohio where he received the award for Senior Medical Resident of the Year in 2000. Dr. Swigris completed his Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine fellowship at Stanford University in 2004, a year in which he also earned a Master of Science degree from Stanford in Epidemiology.

Dr. Swigris has been a member of the National Jewish Health faculty since 2005.
