Overview / Abstract: |
The Global Initiative for Chronic Obstructive Lung Disease (GOLD) has made updates for the 2020 Report. There are new recommendations when managing COPD, factors to consider when initiating inhaled corticosteroid treatment, defining what COPD is, and more. This CE session will highlight updates in clinical practice guidelines that evaluate COPD management and approach. Additionally, this session will provide a guide to pharmacists in providing appropriate counseling on proper inhaler technique. One barrier to effective disease management is inappropriate respiratory inhaler technique. Without proper inhaler technique, many patients receive suboptimal medication deposition into their lungs. This is an opportunity for pharmacist intervention, to improve inhaler technique, decrease exacerbation, and increase symptom management. This course is structured to deliver interactive learning through the use of knowledge-based questions after each major topic that is covered. Learning Objectives Compare and contrast 2019 GOLD guidelines with the updated 2020 GOLD guidelines for treatment of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease Create a medication regimen for treating varying severities of COPD utilizing the ABCD model Identify who is a candidate for inhaler corticosteroid use Effectively counsel patients on inhaler devices |
