THE CONVERSION TO HUMAN REGULAR 500 UNITS/ML INSULIN UTILIZINGCONTINUOUS GLUCOSE MONITORING (CGM)

Access Activity

Overview / Abstract:

This CE will briefly highlight the previous standard practice for administering U-500 and examine the current available delivery device options for safe and efficacious administration of human regular insulin 500 units/ml with a dedicated U-500 syringe and an insulin pen. The safe and effective use of U-500 requires careful monitoring to optimize glycemic control while minimizing the risk of hypoglycemia. The role, value and usage of continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) will be discussed and demonstrated throughout this session. This session will utilize a patient case example to highlight a candidate for U-500 insulin therapy, the transition to U-500, and appropriate therapy adjustments at various intervals.

Learning Objectives:

Upon completion of this activity, the participant should be able to:

Identify candidates for human regular insulin 500 units/ml and discuss dosing strategies for its use

Explain the available delivery device options for safe and efficacious administration of human regular insulin 500 units/ml with a dedicated U-500 syringe and insulin pen

Recognize the benefits of continuous glucose monitoring to aid in the ability to dose human regular insulin 500 units/ml
